A new hope for multiple myeloma: Understanding BCMA CAR-T therapy

If you or a loved one has been facing multiple myeloma, you know how challenging this disease can be. Thankfully, medical science has made exciting progress in recent years. One of the most promising treatments is called BCMA CAR-T therapy. While the name may sound complicated, the idea behind it is quite powerful — using your own immune system to fight the cancer.

What is Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that starts in the plasma cells — special cells in your bone marrow that help you fight infections. In myeloma, these cells grow out of control, crowding out healthy cells and causing problems like bone pain, fatigue, and infections.

What is CAR-T Therapy?

CAR-T therapy is a type of immunotherapy, which means it helps your immune system find and destroy cancer cells. Here’s how it works:

  1. T cells, a type of white blood cell that normally fights infection, are collected from your blood.
  2. In a special lab, these T cells are “trained” by adding a new gene. This gene helps them grow special receptors on their surface, called CARs (Chimeric Antigen Receptors).
  3. These CARs are like tiny GPS trackers that help the T cells find and attack cancer cells that carry a target called BCMA (B-cell maturation antigen).
  4. Once the cells are ready, they’re put back into your body to go after the myeloma.

What is BCMA and Why Is It Important?

BCMA is a protein found on the surface of most multiple myeloma cells. Because it’s not found on many healthy cells, it’s a great target for treatment. CAR-T cells trained to look for BCMA can go straight to the cancer, leaving most of your healthy cells alone.

Which BCMA CAR-T therapies are available?

Up to May 2025, there are four BCMA CAR-T therapies have been approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma.

Is BCMA CAR T-cell Therapy Right for Me?

BCMA CAR-T cell therapy is a highly effective method in the treatment of multiple myeloma. Learn more about BCMA CAR-T therapy from our specialist and plan your treatment.

What can patients expect?

BCMA CAR-T therapy is usually given to people who have tried other treatments but whose cancer has come back or stopped responding.

Here’s what the process looks like:

  • Step 1: Cell collection – Your T cells are collected through a process called leukapheresis.
  • Step 2: Cell engineering – Your T cells are sent to a lab to be modified and multiplied.
  • Step 3: Conditioning treatment – You may receive a short course of chemotherapy to prepare your body.
  • Step 4: CAR-T cell infusion – Your new “supercharged” cells are given back to you through an IV.
  • Step 5: Monitoring and recovery – You’ll stay in the hospital or near a treatment center for close monitoring for a few weeks.

Are There Side Effects?

Yes, like any cancer treatment, there are possible side effects. Some people may experience:

  • Cytokine Release Syndrome (CRS): A temporary immune reaction that can cause fever, low blood pressure, or breathing trouble.
  • Neurologic symptoms: Such as confusion, headache, or difficulty speaking.
  • Low blood counts and infections

These side effects are usually treatable, especially when caught early. Visit the managing side effects page to get more information about how the doctors try to prevent and manage the side effects.

Is BCMA CAR-T Therapy Right for Me?

Your doctor will help you decide. It may be considered if:

  • You’ve had multiple treatments that stopped working.
  • Your health is good enough to go through the process.
  • You can stay near a treatment center for follow-up care.

Final Thoughts
