CAR-T cell therapy is no longer limited to blood cancers. In China, the approval of Satri-cel (CT041) in June 2026 marked an important milestone for CAR-T treatment of solid tumors. Satri-cel targets CLDN18.2 and is approved for eligible patients with CLDN18.2-positive, HER2-negative advanced gastric cancer or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma after at least two lines of treatment have failed.
What Factors Determine Eligibility?
There is no single test that determines whether someone can receive CAR T-cell therapy. Doctors usually assess several factors together.
1. Cancer Type and Diagnosis
The first consideration is whether the patient’s cancer is an appropriate target for an available CAR T-cell therapy.
Different CAR-T cell therapy products recognize different proteins, such as CD19 or BCMA. For solid tumors, other targets such as CLDN18.2 may be considered.

Many approved CAR-T cell therapies are intended for patients whose cancer has relapsed or become refractory after previous treatments.

A patient’s age alone does not necessarily determine eligibility. Overall health and the ability to safely undergo treatment are often more important than age by itself.

Who May Not Be a Candidate?

What Happens Before CAR T-Cell Therapy?
Patients who appear to be potential candidates usually undergo a detailed evaluation before treatment.

- Medical record review – Previous pathology, imaging, laboratory results, and treatment history are reviewed.
- Target testing – Doctors confirm whether the cancer expresses the target required by the selected CAR-T cell therapy.
- General health assessment – Blood tests, imaging, organ-function tests, and infection screening may be performed.
- Specialist evaluation – The CAR T-cell team determines whether treatment is appropriate and which product may be suitable.
- Treatment planning – If eligible, the team discusses cell collection, manufacturing, bridging treatment when needed, lymphodepletion, CAR T-cell infusion, and monitoring.
Can International Patients Be Evaluated?
Yes. International patients can often begin with a remote medical review before traveling to China.
Medical records such as pathology reports, imaging, laboratory results, previous treatment summaries, and medication information can be reviewed by a specialist team. This can help determine whether a patient may be a potential candidate before making arrangements to travel.
However, a preliminary review does not guarantee treatment. Final eligibility generally requires an in-person assessment and additional testing at the treating hospital.
