What cancers can be treated with CAR T-cell therapy?

CAR T-cell therapy has demonstrated significant promise in treating hematologic malignancies, with several CAR T-cell therapies already approved for the treatment of blood cancers. Additionally, numerous clinical trials are currently underway in both China and the United States to explore the efficacy of CAR T-cell therapy for other cancer indications.

Some of the cancers that can be treated with CAR T-cell therapy include:

1. Blood Cancers (Hematologic Malignancies)

  • Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): Particularly in pediatric and young adult patients, CAR T-cell therapy has been successful in treating relapsed or refractory B-cell ALL.
  • Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): CAR T-cell therapy has been used for patients with relapsed or refractory CLL, particularly those who have not responded to other treatments.
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL): CAR T-cell therapy is effective for certain types of NHL, especially:
    • Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL)
    • Follicular Lymphoma
    • Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL)
    • Primary Central Nervrous System Lymphoma (PCNSL)
  • Multiple Myeloma: CAR T-cell therapy for multiple myeloma involves modifying a patient’s T cells to target and attack myeloma cells expressing BCMA. Commercial CAR T-cell therapy FUCASO (Equecabtagene Autoleucel) have shown remarkable results in treating relapsed or refractory cases, offering deep remissions.

2. Other Cancers Under Investigation

  • Solid Tumors: Research is ongoing to expand CAR T-cell therapy to solid tumors, though progress has been slower. Some of the cancers being explored include:
    • Breast Cancer: Efforts are underway to target specific antigens present on breast cancer cells.
    • Lung Cancer: Trials are exploring the use of CAR T-cells in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
    • Ovarian Cancer: Some studies are investigating CAR T-cells for ovarian cancer treatment.
    • Colorectal Cancer: Research is also exploring CAR T-cell therapy for colorectal cancer, although challenges remain due to the tumor microenvironment.

While CAR T-cell therapy has been transformative for certain blood cancers, its application to solid tumors remains an area of active research. The therapy is typically used when other treatment options have failed or in advanced stages of the disease.
